||Network Support Specialist

||$ 37.39 - $ 44.17 per hour
||This is skilled technical work in maintaining and enhancing the performance of the District's computer and communications network. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the functionality and efficiency of the computer and communications network; maintaining the utilization of the District's investment in server and desktop computers and peripherals; troubleshooting network hardware, diagnosing and resolving software and related problems; monitoring network performance and diagnosing performance problems, providing advice and assistance to users and departmental staff on technical matters; and maintaining a current awareness of computing and communications industry developments. Considerable independence and judgment is exercised and work performance is reviewed by a superior in terms of adherence to administrative requirements and effective utilization of the system, network and desktop capabilities.
|Education & Experience
||Graduation from a post secondary institution with a degree or diploma in Telecommunications or Communications and Network Systems including Network Certification in the District's chosen technology, plus considerable related experience, including network management and supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Thorough knowledge of the characteristics and capabilities of the District's computer and communications network, components and related software.
Thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures used in the installation and operation of computer equipment and software applications as related to the work performed.
Considerable knowledge of communications network and operating techniques and procedures as related to the work performed.
Considerable knowledge of the practices and procedures used to secure computer and communications systems as related to the work performed.
Considerable knowledge of the departmental policies, procedures and practices related to the work performed.
Considerable knowledge of the functions and operations of departments served and their requirements as related to the work performed.
Working knowledge of computer programming as related to the work performed.
Ability to assign, check, supervise, and evaluate the work of staff involved in computer systems and user support work.
Ability to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of the District's computer and communications network and to implement remedial actions as required.
Ability to examine user’s current applications, practices, and needs, and identify problems and recommend or implement solutions or improvements.
Ability to investigate and resolve operating system and network hardware and related component problems as related to the work performed.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff and external contacts.
Ability to develop, coordinate and/or deliver training or education seminars related to the work.
Ability to participate in the design or revision to network and communications architecture and to develop, code, test, and maintain a variety of command procedures and programs related to the work.
Ability to prepare and maintain a variety or records, statistics, documentation and budgets related to the work.
|Licences, Certificates & Registrations
- Driver’s License valid in the Province of British Columbia.
- Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in managing networks, including proficiency in TCP/IP and routing, DNS, switches, firewalls and load balancing
- Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience in Unix operating systems
- Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in managing backup systems
- Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in managing mail servers
- Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience with District technology
- Occasional inspection or manipulation of cables in floors and ceilings.
- Lifting, transporting and mounting of moderately heavy objects, such as servers and network equipment.
In accordance with Article 12:01 (1) (c) on occasion, this position can be assigned to work evenings and weekends.
