Position Title Environmental Risk Assessor III or IV

Role Purpose/Accountabilities • Primary role is to conduct environmental risk assessments, advise Syngenta colleagues and stakeholders on the safety of new genetically modified (GM) crops, and support registrations of these products worldwide.
• Provide technical expertise and recommendations to Syngenta colleagues and stakeholders on strategies for data development and environmental risk assessment of genetically modified crops and implement agreed strategies
• Plan, contract and monitor non-target organism ecotoxicology studies at contract laboratories; interpret data from the studies; organize internal reviews of reports for regulatory submissions
• Ensure integrity of environmental safety work programs and application of environmental safety knowledge
• Conduct environmental risk assessments including non-target organism exposure assessments, laboratory and/or field hazard assessments and weediness assessments and provide documentation to support global regulatory submissions for registrations of new genetically modified crops
• Work closely with regulatory affairs, regulatory science and product safety teams to develop and optimize technical/scientific capabilities and ensure data development needs are defined and implemented on a timely basis to support regulatory submissions of dossiers
• Interact with regulatory authorities worldwide as needed to discuss and resolve issues concerning the environmental safety of Syngenta’s GM products
• Monitor and advise colleagues on regulatory trends and emerging issues in environmental risk assessment of GM crops and develop strategic plans to address these
• Represent the company through participation in professional organizations/workshops, industry-wide task forces and scientific forums
Knowledge, Skills & Experience Critical knowledge
• This is a mid-level position for an incumbent with several years of demonstrated proficiency in environmental risk assessment or research involving the ecotoxicology of insecticidal pesticides. Knowledge of risk assessment paradigms for genetically modified crops is preferred.

Critical experience
• Ph.D. in an environmental toxicology-related field (ecotoxicology, environmental safety, risk assessment or related field) and experience with risk assessment, interactions with regulatory authorities, and issue management are preferred

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities
• Strong planning, organizing, and problem solving skills are required. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well in a team environment with a diverse group of people and the ability to interact and communicate in written and verbal form with internal and external customers are vital to this position. An understanding of the techno-regulatory environment for genetically modified crops is needed. High level of advocacy and influencing skills and an ability to deal with and influence senior people internal and external to Syngenta are needed. Creativity and leadership in developing and advocating new approaches to address issues or solve problems are required. This position is best suited for an energetic team-player with the ability to multi-task and who understands both the technical details as well as the broader picture. The ability to adapt and develop technical skills in multiple disciplines beyond area of expertise and manage multiple projects and priorities is needed.
Critical Success Factors & Key Challenges • Rapidly gain understanding of the Syngenta portfolio and processes in order to deliver work products and make recommendations on environmental risk assessment strategies
• Combine technical knowledge with strong written and oral communication skills to influence internal acceptance of recommendations on environmental risk assessment strategies, complete environmental risk assessments and influence favourable interpretation/acceptance of assessments by external parties
