||Associate Director, Accessible Learning
Reporting to the Associate Director, Accessible Learning, the Disability Consultant is responsible for the direct delivery of services that support and enhance the educational experience of students with disabilities (e.g. physical, psychological/psychiatric, learning, medical or sensory disabilities). This position will ensure that appropriate accommodations are identified to meet the needs of students. The incumbent will work in collaboration with other services and staff provided in the Accessible Learning Office to ensure timely access to needed supports and alternate format materials, if required.
The Disability Consultant will offer a wide range of services including assessment, identification and implementation of supports for students with physical, medical, sensory, learning and psychological/psychiatric disabilities. They will assist with provision of students educational requirements and/or accommodations, individual programming for each student; faculty and staff liaison, on-going individual counselling; evaluation of student’s progress; and innovation of new supports and mechanisms which encourage student independence. The incumbent will, from time to time, create and provide presentationson issues of relevance to students with disabilities, and therefore needs to be familiar with educational strategies and methodology in creating and implementing programs and presentations.
The incumbent will also be involved in the development and implementation of university and community outreach programs, particularly in the education of faculty, staff and students. The incumbent will work closely with both on-campus and community resources and professionals in offering the best possible service to students.
- Engages students and collateral supports in the development of the accommodation plan. Conducts an assessment of disability barriers and review of supporting documentation to determine appropriate accommodations;
- Makes recommendations as necessary for medical or psycho-educational assessments; administering screening tests when Learning Disability and/or ADHD is suspected. Facilitating appropriate linkages to professionals for assessment and diagnosis.
- Discusses and interprets assessments with psychologists, medical practitioners and students as needed to determine most appropriate accommodations;
- Determines appropriate temporary accommodations until full assessment process is complete;
- Evaluates outcomes of accommodation plan and facilitates changes as needed via regular student update and review meetings;
- Consults with Faculty and administration to ensure accommodations do not comprise the integrity of essential course requirements and to provide essential updates as needed;
- Participates as needed on relevant faculty petition processes, supports students with navigation of the petition process and writes letters of support (if appropriate);
- Makes recommendations and referrals as needed for assistive technology support, transcription and/or learning strategy support within the Accessible Learning Centre;
- Facilitates access to exam support accommodations;
- Makes referrals as necessary to writing and study skills, counseling, housing (residents placements) or other on and off-campus service providers;
- Implements all affiliated initiatives including bursary applications, exam forms etc;
- Consults with prospective students, their parents and teachers/counselor when necessary;
- Ensures accommodations are updated in the database;
- Provides crisis intervention and management to students with complex needs; identifying need, supporting and linking to appropriate resources.
- Maintains case records documenting student progress, development and learning outcomes;
- Participates in regular case conferences to discuss student needs and progress;
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education or related field.
- Demonstrated experience in planning and facilitating academic accommodations in post secondary environments (minimum 2 years);
- Demonstrated understanding of educational strategies and methodology in creating and implementing programs and workshops for students faculty and staff (minimum 2 years);
- Experience working in a university, post secondary environment, with students with disabilities;
- Demonstrated knowledge of standardized cognitive and achievement measures as well as other test materials (WAISS-III and WJ-R ) and ability to interpret the same;
- Proven high level of communication, organizational, and problem solving skills;
- Demonstrated understanding of disability issues (Learning Disabilities/ADHD,
- Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mental Health First Aide, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills), relevant government legislation (Human Rights, A.O.D.A.) and community resources;
- Excellent interpersonal writing and presentation skills;
- Working knowledge of computer software programs including WP, MS Access and specialized hardware designed for students with disabilities.

*Hours of Work: This is a 28 hour per week position from March 4, 2013 to August 9, 2013.
This position is represented by the WLU Staff Association bargaining unit.
