Job Summary
The SMART (Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together)® Coordinator is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operation of the SMART functional fitness programs in accordance with VON Standards. The SMART Coordinator recruits, directs and motivates volunteers, assesses clients for service, monitors service delivery and contributes to the development, evaluation and promotion of volunteer programs.
Please note: This part-time position is set up for mentoring over a period of time, hours will increase accordingly.
Human Resources and Volunteer Management:

Responsible for the recruitment, selection, orientation, training, supervision, continuing education and performance review of volunteers.


Program Management:

Effectively delivers client services consistent with established standards.



Provides input into the development of the strategic and operational plan and budget for SMART Program as appropriate.


Program Development:

In collaboration with the Senior Program Development Coordinator and the Manager of Community Support Services, plans for and develops new community support/volunteer services.


Quality Management:

Functions in accordance with the principles of client-focused service and continuous quality improvement and the standards of VON Canada.


Marketing/Public Relations:

Promotes Community Support/Volunteer Services to community agencies and the general public to increase awareness, and for the benefit of individual clients by representing VON in a professional and positive manner.

Functions in accordance with the VON vision, mission, philosophy, values and VON Canada and Branch policies and procedures.

  • Post-Secondary education in Health/Social Science discipline (or the equivalent combination of qualifications/education plus experience in community work and volunteer administration)
  • Post secondary education in Volunteer Management or a minimum two years experience in Volunteer Leadership
  • Experience or understanding of the not-for-profit healthcare environment
  • Knowledge and experience in program planning and evaluation 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the social and health care services network and community resources
  • Strong time management, follow-up and organizational skills
  • Knowledge and experience in Gerontology an asset
  • Experience providing exercise programming for seniors an asset
  • Community development, public speaking, fundraising and budgeting experience an asset
  • Computer savvy and proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Valid driver's license, insurance and use of vehicle is mandatory
