This is a professional economic development position in the Economic Development Division of the Investment and Intergovernmental Relations Department. The Investment & Intergovernmental Liaison reports to the Manager of Economic Development and is responsible for developing and implementing programs and initiatives related to business attraction, retention and growth; for identifying and pursuing investment opportunities; supporting intergovernmental issues and opportunities; and for providing support in creating and maintaining relationships with a diverse range of partners including those in local, provincial and federal government, businesses, business and industry associations, universities, and City departments.

Responsibilities will include developing strategic economic development initiatives designed to ensure Surrey is recognized as the premier location in BC for business, investment and innovation. Strategies and related actions will focus on key programs such as enhancing intergovernmental relations, business recruitment and expansion, focused sector development including clean energy and healthcare, international market development, broad sector and market research/analysis and business network development.

The Investment & Intergovernmental Liaison will deliver work that enhances the economy and quality of life in Surrey, in alignment with Surrey’s Sustainability Charter. Initiatives such as market research and development, building key partnerships with government, industry and the business community, and best practices research, will be at the core of this role’s accountabilities. You will support businesses in establishing, sustaining and expanding their presence in Surrey. You will assist in establishing and maintaining an on-going dialogue with contacts within local, provincial and federal levels of government, business and industry associations, universities and City departments.

The successful candidate will bring to the Economic Development team the following:

  • A degree in Commerce, Economics or Business Administration supplemented by a minimum of 3 years of current experience in business development, marketing or a combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills,Ability to initiate and nurture business relationships
  • Ability to manage a complex workload with multiple initiatives
  • Desire to take responsibility for individual contribution to team projects
  • Ability to meet deadlines and produce quality deliverables,
  • Professional and enthusiastic attitude coupled with strong business acumen,
  • Strong research/analytical/reporting skills, and general familiarity and comfort with the use of social media.
  • Experience in the Public Sector will be an asset
Note Effective fall 2013, City Hall will be moving to a new state-of-the-art facility located in North Surrey (King George and 104th area). Surrey's New City Hall (NCH) is part of the Build Surrey program, designed to make Surrey an even more exciting place to live and work, and to position the city for growth over the next decade. NCH will act as a catalyst to stimulate job creation in the city and will be easily accessible to residents and businesses.
