Under the direction of the Health and Safety Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring that a safe working/learning environment exists by conducting investigations and ensuring recommendations are implemented in compliance with legislation/regulations and college policies/procedures related to health and safety, thus protecting the college from legal liability or other litigation. Ensures programs are in place to identify potential health and safety concerns in order that they can be addressed. Consults with all levels of management and provides expertise in the form of development of programs, providing information or advice that will ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.
• Responsible for ensuring the implementation of health and safety programs, policies or procedures to ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario, related regulations and Ontario Fire Code. • Develops required programs, policies or procedures for college-wide requirements; determines appropriate action and provides information to management in order to ensure compliance is achieved. • Addresses potential health and safely concerns by inspecting, auditing or investigating the workplace based on the concerns of employees, supervisors or health and safety committees. • Recommends solutions and maintains records for reporting requirements; responds as the Employer to concerns under the terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario. • Conducts occupational hygiene testing/sampling, such as asbestos, mould, sound levels, fume hoods, using techniques that comply with established standards, interprets resulting lab analysis reports and compares to legislative standards. • Provides first aid/CPR training to employees and maintains required first aid kits. • Provides WHIMIS training, safe lifting techniques, new employee orientations, and workstation set-up. • Provides training and expertise to health and safety committee members in order that they can best fulfil their responsibilities. • Reviews all injury/accident reports in order to take action/make recommendations to identify trends and ensure appropriate corrective action is taken.
• 3 Year post-secondary diploma/degree in Occupational Health and Safety. • Minimum 2 years work experience in occupational health and safety with strong industrial hygiene experience, use of associated equipment, and working with health and safety committees. • First Aid/CPR Instructors certification – Level C is required. • Demonstrated experience working with a unionized public sector employer; formal technical report writing; training experience with WHMIS, First Aid/CPR and other related health and safety topics. • Advanced analytical skills to identify, research and resolve health and safety concerns; ability to interpret analytical/technical reports related to health and safety. • Ability to use and maintain industrial hygiene equipment; training in performing ergonomic assessments and physical demands analysis. • Ability to work under pressure or a crisis situation during emergency situations; innovative, proactive self-starter, capable of managing multi-task assignments. • Well developed client service, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) to interact effectively with a multi-cultural/racial/able staff and students. • Access to a reliable vehicle in order to travel from campus to campus.
