Reporting to the Senior Manager, Accessibility Services, the Assistive Technologist will be responsible for the prescription and instruction of assistive technologies that students with disabilities require to support their academic activities at Seneca@York and other campuses as the need arises. The Assistive Technologist meets in one-to-one sessions to work on specific skills with students, and generate progress reports for the student and their counselor.
• Instructs students on the use of assistive technology, features and functionality of software programs, hardware and equipment • Meets with students and prescribes assistive technologies based on documented disability • Prepares reports for student and counselor with respect to prescription of assistive technology and instructions given to students • Reviews students needs based on documentation such as psycho-educational report, medical reports, individual education plans (IEP), etc. • Conducts ongoing research current and evolving technologies for students with disabilities • Ongoing learning of new assistive technologies and software to determine application viability, and to instruct students on their use • Problem solves technology malfunction or problems • Corresponds and consults with students, counselors and others on various issues • Assists with planning and conducting of workshops for students, faculty and others • Work in partnership with financial aid over application for Bursary for Students with Disabilities
• Minimum 3 year post-secondary diploma in a computer related field is required • Minimum 2 years of progressively responsible professional experience in the computer field and work experience with assistive devices and training in a post-secondary setting are required • Certificate in Learning Disability Specialist – Assistive Technology, or a post-secondary degree in related field is preferred • An understanding of adults with learning disabilities (e.g. post-secondary courses in psychology or education) is an asset • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and faculty in both individual and group situations. • A thorough understanding of microcomputers and the use of specialized software and assistive peripheral devices • Knowledge of available special programs for reading, writing and organizational assistance • Excellent troubleshooting skills and knowledge of software and hardware interactions • Ability to compile and analyze data • Strong communication, interpersonal and public relations skills in a diverse multi-cultural/racial/able environment • Ability to work well in a team and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning • Ability to demonstrate patience and sensitivity to disability issues, particularly learning disabilities • Training in adult education with emphasis on understanding adult training requirements in the area of learning disabilities • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for travel between campuses
