Position Overview Reporting to the Director, Finance, the incumbent will review monthly internal financial statements, revenue and expense schedules, with variance analysis. Report monthly on statement of operations, balance sheet, capital expenditures and net assets. Prepare detailed working papers in support of year-end financial reporting and audit requirements. Co-ordinates, prepares, completes and submits the Colleges’ statutory reporting requirements (CRA, MTCU) and provides supervision and direction to staff in Cash Office operations.
Responsibilities • Manages day-to-day operations of the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Accounting and Cash Office.
• Presents monthly internal financial statements, analyzes revenue and expenses schedules and provides detailed explanation of variances between actual and budget. Communicates findings to divisional budget holder(s).
• Co-ordinates, prepares, completes and submits College statutory reporting requirements including all Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Training, Colleges and University, etc. Complexity of reports and subject matter requires detail knowledge and understanding of project guidelines and regulations.
• Assists in developing financial forecasting models to assess financial impact(s) in relation to various College Plans (Strategic, Academic, Business, etc.)
• Continuous monitoring of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in support of overall stewardship responsibilities of College assets. Ensure the efficient and effective delivery of accounting and cash handling services to the College community.
• Explores, develops, communicates and implement new methodologies that leverage technology to achieve continuous improvement that lead to College wide business process improvements (i.e. report development, system maintenance, etc.)
• Coordinates annual audits; prepares annual financial statement, prepares MTCU mid-year and final reports. Audits reports required for external funding (research, government, private).
• Responds to queries from internal and external clients (e.g. Ministry staff and auditors) on a timely basis.
• Provides leadership to staff, determines priorities, recruits and selects staff; manages performance and provide feedback, identifies development opportunities, resolves conflicts, disciplines or terminates as necessary.
• Keeps abreast of new CICA and ministry guidelines to ensure reporting is aligned with requirements.
• Supports the Manager, Budgets and Financial Planning with annual budget consolidation.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications • 4 year Degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent education.
• CMA, CGA or CA designation required.
• Minimum 7 years work experience in financial reporting / analyses.
• Advanced working knowledge in the use of integrated financial systems and demonstrated understanding of financial reporting.
• Proven analytical skills combined with intuition and creativity, and the ability to resolve issues independently, without intervention by senior management.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to explain accounting procedures with non-financial personnel (Deans, Directors, Chairs) across the diverse College community.
• Evidence of sensitivity to the issues of working within a multicultural environment.
• PeopleSoft experience an asset.
