Public Affairs and Media Relations Specialist (Appendix D/ Temporary Position From January 20, 2013 to February 15, 2014)
Reporting to the Director, Strategic Planning and Public Affairs, the Specialist works with internal stakeholders to write media releases that incorporate the College’s key messages and that present the College in a professional way. The position requires knowledge of media style guides and social media tools. The Specialist manages the College’s relationship with media, uses analytic tools to track and generate media activity reports, advises the Seneca community on media relations approaches and strategies as well as providing support for issues management. The Specialist creates content for internal and external publications, web material and major college events and is responsible for devising proactive media pitches and briefing notes to support interviews. S/he advises on communications procedures and practices, and ensures that external College communications explain and reinforce the College’s Strategic Plan and priorities.
• Researches ideas/initiatives that support College strategic objectives and presents them in a professional and creditable manner, following media-accepted styles (CP) to the external community including, major media outlets, ethnic media, community groups, partners, government agencies and specific-targeted publications. • Interviews subjects including students, staff, faculty, alumni and College partners. • Writes media releases that support strategic objectives and portray the success of the College, its people and partners. • Creates original material in the form of articles, advertorial pieces, social media and internal site postings. • Adheres to deadlines to assure items remain newsworthy. • Coordinates photographs that can be sent to news media and trade publications to promote the College. • Arranges interview times and locations for media inquiries resulting from media releases. • Handles media calls in a timely manner; ensures contacts are found and briefed and ensures the necessary approvals are in place. • Conducts media training and attends interviews in-person as necessary. • Represents the College in a professional manner and establishes/maintains relationships with the media. • Develops communications and media plans to co-ordinate media outreach and responses, establish strategic goals and tactics. • Works with Director of Strategic Planning and Public Affairs to identify stories of potential media interest that promote the College, its faculties/program and students/alumni/staff positively. • Pushes Seneca content on social media tools (e.g. Twitter and Facebook) as appropriate. • Advises Supervisor and/or Executive on working with media. • Writes briefing notes/key messages to ensure “on target” messaging and accuracy in interviews. • Works with those being interviewed to ensure they are comfortable and at ease with material being presented. • Uses media scans and analytics tools to track College coverage daily. • Generates monthly activity reports and other reports as requested, keeps hard copy files up-to-date; performs other duties as assigned.
• Demonstrated competencies attained through a recognized post-secondary three year diploma/degree in Journalism. • Minimum of five years’ of proven experience in a media environment such as newspaper reporting or corporate communications. • Strong understanding of journalistic practices and styles and ability to write in didactic inverse pyramid (Canadian Press) style. • Proficiency with the PC operating system and understanding of OSX Macintosh operating system. • Understanding of photographic principles and proficiency with digital photography including manipulation software (Adobe Photoshop). • Superior interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) to interact with the College’s multi-cultural/racial/able staff, students and the public. • Experience using social media tools (Twitter and Facebook) and experience using web analytics for reporting is an asset. • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff and management at all levels, maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement. • Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to balance a wide range of competing priorities. • Results and action-oriented approach and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Hourly Wage Rate
Payband K: Start rate $36.97, Maximum rate $42.86
Weekly Hours of Work
35 hours (overtime as required). Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
