Faculty of Applied Arts & Health Sciences (Recreation and Leisure Services)
Reporting to the Academic Chair, School of Public Safety, Underwater Skills, Recreation and Environmental Studies, the Professor will be responsible for providing academic leadership in and beyond the classroom and within the Recreation and Leisure Services program, ensuring an effective and engaging learning environment for students through his/her participation in the design, revision and delivery of curriculum, developing a schedule based on appropriate learning materials, evaluating student performance and providing academic counselling to students. In these respects, the Professor must be able to work effectively both independently and as a team member. The Professor is required to become familiar with the vocational objectives and career paths of his/her students and, where appropriate, incorporate this knowledge into course materials and assignments. It is essential that the Professor be receptive to employing new teaching methods and be willing to participate in the adaptation of courses, or parts of courses, to electronic and other self-directed and project-based delivery modes within and outside the classroom.
The Professor will primarily be engaged to lead the course Personal Growth and Group Dynamics within the Recreation and Leisure Services diploma program. • Within the School of Recreation and Environmental Studies, the Professor will teach the assigned courses within the program and may be called upon to assist in the design, development and delivery of this and other courses. • Responsible for providing academic leadership and for developing an effective learning environment for students including the design, revision, and updating of courses. • Defines course objectives, evaluates and validates them; specifies or approves learning approaches and necessary resources. • Develops individualized instruction and multimedia presentations where applicable, focussing primarily on experiential and project-based learning. • Selects or approves textbooks and learning materials. • Provides a learning environment, which makes effective use of available resources, work experience, and field trips. • Evaluates student progress/achievement and assumes responsibility for the overall assessment of the student's work within assigned courses. • Participates in the work of curriculum and other consultative committees as requested.
• The successful candidate will demonstrate competencies attained through a diploma or degree in a discipline related to the field of social work, recreation, organizational change or other related field with a specialization in group dynamics. • A minimum of 5 years directly related work experience is required. • Experience teaching adults at the post-secondary level or training in a work environment is preferred. • Experience employing new teaching and learning methods to ensure that an engaging learning environment is created for students. • Excellent presentation, communication and human relations skills are essential to interact effectively with the College’s multi-cultural/racial/able student and staff population, as is an understanding of and commitment to equity in education. • Demonstrated proficiency in usage of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. • Able to work independently and with other faculty to develop and deliver curriculum and contribute positively to the team environment. • Demonstrated leadership, organizational skills, motivation and a willingness to innovate and apply new teaching techniques and technologies are also required. • Commitment to team approach for problem solving and conflict resolution are essential. • Demonstrated focus on student success.
