Counsellor – Learning Strategist (Sessional) (January 2, 2014 to December 24, 2014)
Reporting to the Director, Counselling and Accessibility Services, and the Counsellor-Learning Strategist will review learning disability documentation, develop and deliver enhanced services, specifically learning strategies to students with disabilities to support them in achieving their academic goals. This position will assist students with disabilities in identifying their learning style and adapting it to meet academic goals. The Counsellor-Learning Strategist duties include testing and evaluation of individuals to assist them in their personal, educational/vocational development; group counselling in a non-instructional activity and assisting administration, faculty and staff in a consultative role in identifying and dealing with student problems encountered within an academic setting. The Counsellor-Learning Strategist works closely with the counselling staff providing disability services to ensure early intervention alerts are brought to the attention of the student (where applicable) and their Disability Counselor where the student is at risk of non-completion due to the presence of learning disability issues and maintains records on students’ progress and submits reports as requested. The Counsellor-Learning Strategist will refer the student to appropriate services and resources within the College and/or the community to address suspected difficulties or issues that may interfere with the student’s learning. In addition, the Counselor-Learning Strategist may, from time to time, be called upon to contribute to other areas ancillary to the role, such as student recruitment and selection, student employment, liaison with community service programs and agencies, professional development and control of equipment. Travel between campuses is required.
• The successful candidate will have demonstrated competencies attained through a minimum of a Master’s Degree Program in a Psychology or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary educational institution. A Learning Strategist Assistive Technology specialization or certificate in addition to a Master’s Degree is preferred. • Minimum of three years’ experience with persons with disabilities in a post-secondary educational setting is required. • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of specialized educational software to support students with unique learning needs. • Familiarity with brief therapy or solution focused training and learning strategies is essential. • Excellent communication and human relation skills are essential to interact effectively with the College’s multicultural/racial backgrounds and diverse abilities within the student and staff population, as is an understanding of and commitment to equity in education. • Ability to be innovative and possesses a team orientated approach. • Familiarity with issues of disability as well as being knowledgeable in the Ontario Human Rights Code. • Demonstrated ability in crisis intervention, including abuse, grief and suicide counselling is considered to be essential skills.
