Role Summary
Fire Protection Specialist Level 1 is an entry level supervised position that is responsible for understanding the application of fire insurance grades and responding to insurance underwriters with clarification regarding interpretation of fire insurance grades.
The position is also involved in data collection under the direction of a senior surveyor. The FPS1 position is responsible for developing an understanding of relevant codes including the Canadian Public Fire Protection Classification Standard, the National Building Code and the National Fire Code. An FPS1 must understand these standards to a reasonable level and be able to quickly reference these documents to provide support to senior surveyors in the calculation of fire insurance grades.
The FPS1 must be well organized and be strong in the areas of math and logic. The FPS1 will also be responsible for providing support to senior surveyors in calculating grades. All work will be directed and supervised.

a)     Provide customer service to the insurance community regarding fire insurance grades.
-       Provide timely, polite and accurate responses to insurer queries.
-       Clarify fire insurance grades for insurers and underwriters in regard to fire protection boundaries, fire hydrant protection, and travel distances from recognized fire stations to specific risks.
b)    Provide support to senior surveyors and the FUS organization in administration, archiving, mapping and related fire insurance grading support areas.
c)     Become increasingly familiar with the Canadian Public Fire Protection Classification Standard to produce Public Fire Protection Classifications (PFPC) and Dwelling Protection Grades (DPG) for communities throughout Canada.
-       Review and evaluate field data collected for fire insurance grading of communities using the Canadian Public Fire Protection Classification Standard
d)    Participate in risk assessments for small communities (1 fire hall) in order to determine required fire flows for use in fire insurance grading:
-       Analyze building size and construction in addition to the occupancy, the contents and the exposures to the buildings.
-       Calculate Required Fire Flows using Fire Underwriters methodologies
-       Organize risk assessment data and develop Fire Flow Dema
Education, knowledge and experience required  
  • 1 year diploma from an accredited program of studies leading to registration as an Applied Science Technologist or Certified Technician.
  • 1 year of experience in related field of water supplies, fire protection, or municipal planning
  • Registered as GradTech or CTech with Canadian Council for Technicians and Technologists, or equivalent
