Position Summary
Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board invites applications for the position of Investment Analyst, Transactions, Teachers’ Infrastructure Group.With assets exceeding C$117 billion, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) is one of North America’s largest and fastest growing financial institutions. Teachers’ Infrastructure Group (TIG) is a highly-specialized, private equity team that is focused on building a strong portfolio of global infrastructure assets via direct equity investments. Infrastructure investments have a number of unique attributes which make them an excellent hedge against long-term pension liabilities. We seek to make investments which offer attractive risk-adjusted returns and provide stable, long-term, inflation-protected cash flows.
 
Teachers’ has been investing in Infrastructure since 2001 and, by executing on attractive, large-scale acquisitions, has built a portfolio of investments exceeding C$9 billion. The Infrastructure portfolio is geographically diverse with approximately 90% of investments outside Canada, with a mandate to grow through new acquisitions over the coming years. TIG’s portfolio includes investments in Sydney Desalination Plant, a water utility in Australia; High Speed 1, a regulated high-speed rail link in England; Essbio and Esval, two of the largest water utilities in Chile; Global Container Terminals, four marine container terminals in Canada and the USA; Birmingham and Bristol Airports in the UK; Copenhagen and Brussels Airports in Europe, and InterGen, a portfolio of eleven power plants in four countries worldwide.
 
The successful candidate will become an integral part of the Transactions team within the Infrastructure Group, a diverse team of professionals with a mandate to analyze and execute transactions around the globe. This position will report to the Assistant Portfolio Managers within Infrastructure and focus on supporting growth in OTPP's Infrastructure portfolio.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
As an Investment Analyst, you will support the Transactions team in analyzing potential investment opportunities, selecting which opportunities to actively pursue, and being part of live deal teams working to acquire assets which add value for OTPP. The primary responsibilities will be to:
  • Employ advanced, sophisticated financial modeling tools to analyze investment opportunities;
  • Develop, modify and utilize such models to undertake financial analysis and track investment performance for successful acquisitions;
  • Identify key value drivers and financial risks, and perform related sensitivity and scenario analysis;
  • Assist in the due diligence process and incorporate the findings into a financial model;
  • Assist in the financial analysis required to raise third-party financing for acquisitions; and
  • Assist in the preparation of presentations, reports, and investment recommendations to senior management and, where applicable, the Board of OTPP.
 
Qualifications The successful candidate should have very strong technical, analytical and organizational skills. The Analyst must also have very strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills in order to articulate ideas, issues and recommendations internally, as well as with external parties such as investment partners, investment bankers, lawyers, consultants, and senior management of target companies.
 
This role is particularly well-suited to highly motivated team players who enjoy the challenges of the fast-paced private equity environment, can manage multiple projects and thrive on developing new skills.
 
Requirements include:
  • Financial modeling and valuation experience;
  • An undergraduate degree (ideally in business, mathematics or engineering);
  • Advanced skills in Excel and strong proficiency in Word and PowerPoint; and
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
 
The ideal candidate will have at least one year of post undergraduate work experience and/or relevant co-op or internship experience obtained during undergraduate studies. The tenure or current pursuit of a related professional designation (e.g. CFA, CA, CBV) is also considered an asset. The position will require some international travel.
