Title Portfolio Manager, Teachers' Private Capital
Position Summary TPC has a three pillared approach where investment in funds, direct and co-invests have been a core part of the success and continued focus of the private equity arm.    The Funds Team, which currently manages a $6 billion portfolio, contributes to the TPC strategy by acting as the primary source of fund relationship development, diligence, investment recommendation and relationship management.  These fund relationships are generally complementary with our objectives on our direct platform and therefore a high degree of interaction with the rest of TPC is essential. Based in Toronto, Teachers’ Private Capital is seeking a Portfolio Manager to join its Funds team.
 
 
Duties and Responsibilities
The Portfolio Manager will be joining as a senior member of the Funds Team, which focuses on sourcing, recommending and investing in a select number of private equity funds globally. The Portfolio Manager will have primary senior responsibility for continuing to develop TPC’s approach for accessing markets in North America, Europe and globally through fund investing.   The Portfolio Manager will have as a core objective helping to form the strategy and execution of co-investing with our existing and new fund managers and forming strategic relationships. Working as part of a small team, it is essential that the individual be very collaborative, team oriented with an acute sense of steering relationships and opportunities that will benefit TPC and OTPP as a whole. 
 
 
Qualifications
  • 6-8 yrs. work experience in private equity fund investing
  • Experience with co-investing an asset
  • Strong understanding of partnership agreements with experience in direct negotiation of same;
  • Core interest and ability to help develop best practices of TPC Funds team
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills (both oral and written)
  • Strong team player and willingness to develop other team members
  • Excellent representative of OTPP given the high profile the senior funds team has with the broader private equity community (prospective and current managers, limited partners operating globally)
  • An ability to balance competing priorities, work independently, manage projects and thrive in a high performance team environment
  • Strong academic background, with a focus on financial designation (i.e. MBA, CFA)
  • Significant travel required
 
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Understand and regularly update landscape of fund investing opportunities and help develop fund investing strategies
  • Build strong relationships with existing and prospective fund managers, including sourcing opportunities for dialogue and co-investments for TPC
  • Foster strong relationships generally for OTPP / TPC (limited partners, advisors, SWFs, industry associations)
  • Lead any structuring or issues management as required with new or existing fund investments (i.e. tax related)
  • Keep abreast of regulatory issues
  • Lead due diligence on fund managers, which will include detailed work on team, track record, investment strategy, market opportunity for fund strategy, alignment of interests, legal negotiation, validation of overall opportunity fit for TPC
  • Prepare and present written recommendations for fund opportunities to TPC Underwriting Committee and broader Investment Division
  • Serve on Limited Partner Advisory Committees taking a leadership role, consistent with TPC’s desire to promote strong alignment of interest, transparency and good governance with its fund partners
  • Actively participate in ILPA and other industry initiatives
  • Assist Director, Funds on emerging markets strategies for OTPP and any other fund-wide initiatives
  • Continuously seek opportunities to develop direct investing teams’ relationships (i.e. to assist current TPC portfolio companies, co-invest opportunities, etc.)
  • As required, work on co-investment opportunities with fund partners
  • Responsible generally for other aspects of fund portfolio management
