| Key Responsibilities |
Public Health Ontario, London Laboratories, requires a Laboratory Assistant to perform laboratory attendant duties. You will: receive, accession and aliquot specimens; prepare reagents, stains and solutions; process specimens for testing, including centrifuging and separating blood, planting of specimens for bacterial culture, staining of slides for examination, set-up biochemical tests, load analysers etc.; additional responsibilities may include maintaining equipment e.g. incubators and freezers, recording temperature readings, utilizing a computer to look-up data such as patient’s information, stock-keeping, photocopying, faxing and filing. |
| Knowledge and Skills |
Knowledge of medical terminology normally acquired through the completion of a medical laboratory technician’s course or related experience; skills to maintain accuracy in a high volume, repetitive work environment; knowledge of and skills to operate technical equipment e.g. centrifuge, bio-safety cabinet; manual dexterity to open specimens, stopper tubes, capped bottles, set-up biochemical tests; knowledge of computers to look-up data; good knowledge of laboratory safety. |
