The Environmental Health Analyst provides specialized scientific and technical advice on effects of the physical environment, natural and built, on human health that is not available in health units or in government ministries. Assists in the design, conduct and interpretation of environmental exposure, health risk and health assessment studies and/or provide data interpretation in response to requests from public health units, ministries and health professionals regarding a wide range of environmental health topics and issues.

Key Responsibilities • Conducts research and provides expert advice and consultation to clients, provides information or assistance to clients on questions related to environmental science, environmental and occupational epidemiology, sampling and instrumentation, environmental health issues, food and water safety, exposure assessment, toxicology, unusual events such as chemical spills, new chemicals, or other unusual and urgent events based on a review, assessment and synthesis of the latest relevant research, scientific findings or developments in other jurisdictions. Designs, conducts, implements and analyzes exposure and health risk assessment studies for clients.
• Assists with the design and implementation of appropriate testing, sampling protocols/procedures, on how best to proceed in determining/measuring environmental hazards, exposure levels and matters related to environmental health (such as risks to health from physical, chemical and biological hazards in the environment, including air, food, water, other environmental media and those arising from products and processes that may result in human exposure) in response to requests received from public health units, ministries and health care professionals/officials. Responds to urgent but less complex matters in the field and provides expert advice and assistance to local authorities.
• Creates, organizes and maintains databases of information on environmental monitoring data (including food, water, air and other environmental media) collected by PHO and other organizations. Under supervision, ensures that information is set-up to facilitate linkage to health outcome data. Develops or adapts new technology and analytical software as directed to maximize utilization of statistical data. Designs and conducts the statistical analysis and interpretation of data received from health care providers or provincial bodies to identify trends or significant results and draws conclusions based on findings and makes assessments to senior staff by documenting findings, writing reports, summaries and presentation materials.
• Develops and maintains relationships with local public health units, other public health entities and academic institutions on issues, initiatives, activities and legislation impacting environmental health services to support clients’ questions and share information and subject matter expertise.
• Provides assistance on projects within the unit and the Agency and keeps apprised of latest research and developments within the unit, Agency and academic institutions.
• Participates in the delivery of Agency wide educational sessions, professional education sessions for health unit professionals on specific topics related to environmental health.
• Presents findings of work at various local, regional, national, and international forums.
• Maintains and ensures functionality and proper calibration of occupational and environmental sampling equipment. Ensures that equipment lent to clients is appropriate for the intended purpose and is capable of performing accurate readings at the time of loan.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills • Knowledge of environmental science, with a particular focus on toxicology, exposure risk assessment, geosciences, environmental fate and transport, food and water safety, built environment and health links, contaminated site assessment and remediation, use and interpretation of biomarkers or epidemiology, combined with some theoretical knowledge of the scientific protocols, practices/procedures required to assist in designing, implementing and conducting exposure risk and health assessment studies and appropriate testing and sampling protocols/procedures.
• Knowledge of environmental health practice, policy and legislation, emerging trends and research topics to conduct preliminary research, provide support and assistance in field testing, conduct routine tests and provide findings to others for interpretation.
• Knowledge of Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, protocols and practices to safely conduct environmental testing and respond to environmental incidents with potential hazards.
• Knowledge of the activities of the unit as well as of the Agency mandate, services, priorities and procedures to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and follow the framework of established practices and priorities in performing key responsibilities.
• Knowledge of various computer and information systems and of statistical and analytical software programs to maintain information on environmental monitoring data, performs statistical analyses and interprets raw data.
• Knowledge of database, spreadsheet, word processing and presentation software to prepare research reports, summaries and presentation materials.
• Knowledge of databases and information systems relevant to environmental hazards.
• Knowledge and skills in statistics, research and data analysis.
• Knowledge and skills in the operation and implementation of occupational and environmental sampling equipment.

Education and Experience • Master’s degree in a discipline related to occupational and environmental health or toxicology to assist in designing, conducting and implementing exposure protocols, health risk and health assessment studies and/or data interpretation.
