Our Edmonton client requires Data Warehouse Architect / Analyst / Developer for upcoming projects
 
The Data Warehouse Architect/Analyst/Developer is part of a team responsible for the operations and continued development and enhancement of the Corporate Data Warehouse to ensure clients and stakeholders are provided with high quality data. This team:
  • Provides ongoing management and operation of the Corporate Data Warehouse, including coordination of data extraction, loading and transforming and ensuring ongoing data integrity and data quality assurance.
  • Manages and coordinates the acquisition, evaluation, and integration of new data into the Corporate Data Warehouse.
 
The data warehousing environment contains Kindergarten – Grade 12 student registration data, various sets of marks for our learners, certificated staff (e.g. teachers) data, post secondary enrolment data, apprenticeship enrolment data, postal codes and census data. The sets of available data are constantly being expanded to meet the business requirements of the Ministry and our stakeholders.
 
Data is extracted from various data sources such as SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003, Oracle on UNIX, and ADABAS on z/OS. Necessary transformation, data integration and data quality assurance is performed. The data is then loaded into a data warehouse currently residing in SQL Server 2000 on Windows Server 2003. Current ETL processes are done using a variety of tools and methods such as ADABAS/NATURAL programs, Oracle SQL*Plus, FTP, Visual Basic programs, .bat files, SQL Server stored procedures, SQL Server Enterprise Manager, and SQL Server Data Transformation Services. New ETL processes are being developed using IBM WebSphere DataStage.
 
Attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong team skills and the ability to manage time effectively are essential as services will be performed in conjunction with in-house staff.
 
The Data Warehouse Architect/Analyst/Developer works with project managers, business teams and technical teams to provide services on design and construction of corporate data warehouse constructs and subsequent data marts to support the ministries’ information reporting needs.
 
The Vendor’s Resources submitted to supply the services associated with this role requires the following skills:
  • Understanding complex data relationships
  • Integrating similar data from different source systems
  • Understanding of the importance of data quality, data integrity and data security
  • Data analysis and evaluation
  • Business analysis
  • Corporate Data Warehouse design, construction, testing and management
  • Data mart analysis, design, construction and testing
  • Development and maintenance of ETL processes
  • Problem solving/troubleshooting
  • Technical writing/documentation
  • Dealing with clients and team members to resolve issues
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Communicating with clients, business analysts, application support analysts, and Information Reporting staff 
  • Information requirements/needs gathering
  • Analyzing and understanding source systems, business rules and data elements
  • Providing recommendations as to alternatives to meet the requirements
  • Performing data analysis to evaluate data being added to the corporate data warehouse and data marts
  • Creating CDW data models - the entity relationship diagrams and the table and column definitions
  • Creating database objects (such as tables, views, stored procedures)
  • Creating multi-dimensional structures (fact tables and corresponding dimensions)
  • Addressing data integration issues and providing input for potential solutions
  • Identifying data quality issues by creating scripts to verify the quality of data in the operational systems
  • Developing data transformation rules
  • Developing data loading, cleansing and verification procedures
  • Writing code to extract, transform, correlate, integrate, load and verify data being incorporated into the data warehouse
  • Capturing business and technical metadata for the CDW data and processes
  • Testing the procedures and verifying results
  • Performing impact analysis to determine the impact of proposed changes to existing ETL processes
  • Documenting operational procedures, data transformations and methodologies
  • Increasing the quantity and improving the quality of data warehouse documentation; particularly in regard to being more useful to information end users
  • Increasing the quantity and improving the quality of data mart design and implementation documentation; particularly in regard to being more useful to information end users
 
Mandatory Experience/Skill Criteria:
  • Experience working in a data warehouse/business intelligence environment in a development or support role - three (3) years
  • Experience working on a project through all stages from initiation to implementation - two (2) years
  • Experience writing documentation (for example, impact analysis, data definitions, technical design specifications, operations manual, test plans) - two (2) years
  • Experience developing data models - two (2) years
  • Experience working in a Windows operating system environment - two (2) years
  • Experience working in a SQL Server environment - two (2) years
  • Experience creating SQL Server stored procedures - two (2) years
  • Experience using SQL Server Query Analyzer and T-SQL - two (2) years
  • Experience creating SQL Server tables and views - two (2) years
 
Desirable Experience/Skill Criteria:
  • Experience dealing directly with clients
  • Experience querying and analyzing data sources to understand the data and determine logic for data transformations
  • Experience in designing and developing data marts
  • Experience designing, developing and maintaining ETL processes
  • Experience using IBM WebSphere DataStage ETL tool
  • Experience using an ETL tool (excluding Microsoft DTS and DataStage)
  • Experience using SQL Server Data Transformation Services (DTS) to import/export to/from flat files, SQL tables, Access tables
  • Experience with IBM WebSphere MetaStage tool
  • Experience using Microsoft Visio to create diagrams or process models
  • Experience using Visual Source Safe for code version control
  • Experience using Oracle PL\SQL and SQL PLUS
  • Experience with current versions of SQL Server environment
  • Experience working in a Windows Office 2007 or newer environment
  • Experience in capturing metadata
  • Experience with post-secondary education or education systems.
  • Experience with GAEA enterprise architecture framework
  • Experience with AET’s LIFe/LIMS enterprise architecture framework
