Title #2013-166 Associate Director, Accessible Learning Services
Position Summary As a member of the Student Access, Wellness and Development Leadership team, the incumbent is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the areas of Disability Services and Testing Services. The position is accountable for the ensuring the institution meets all legal and ethical requirements when providing accommodation to students. The incumbent must be familiar with current legislation, ministry expectations and liability issues, and provide leadership in the development of goals, vision and services in keeping with higher education best practices in the area of accessible learning. The position must also work closely with Humber’s Academic schools and college departments to ensure understanding around reasonable accommodation, and help to resolve conflicts that may arise. The incumbent will support the integration of universal instructional design principles. The incumbent will continue to help develop mechanisms to educate the community regarding the unique strengths brought to campus by students with disabilities, as well as demonstrate the effectiveness of service strategies using reliable assessment and measures of student success. The incumbent will work with provincial and national colleagues to further communication with government around what systemic issues and barriers exist to the success of all our students. The incumbent will work with the Manager, Testing Services to ensure adherence to best practices in providing Testing Services in a college setting.
Qualifications A graduate degree in Disability Studies, Psychology, Social Work, Counselling or Education is preferred, a degree in another related field will be considered. In addition, the incumbent must possess a minimum 7 years of practical work-related experience including experience in a post-secondary environment with the direct provision of academic support to students with disabilities. Proven administrative leadership is essential with a sophisticated understanding of today’s college student. The successful candidate must possess: the ability to build and operationalize a proper business plan, with proven budgetary skills; training and/or experience in conflict mediation and resolution; an in-depth understanding of equity principles and experience working in diverse populations; excellent oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills to deal with sensitive issues that may involve students, staff, faculty and the community ; excellent analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex issues with competing priorities; experience working in a unionized environment; computer and internet literate, including database management.
