Duties  
Reporting to the Director, Research & Innovation, the incumbent is responsible for the management and administration of projects in the Research Office, liaising with faculty, staff, students and external research partners and funders to ensure deliverables and respective accountabilities, and funder requirements are satisfied. The incumbent plays a key role in the evaluation and accountability of research projects and in the negotiation of research contracts and workplans. 
 
  • Responsible for developing and managing project plans for research projects, including identifying and forming the research project team (both internal and external members), monitoring activities, hiring project management staff, and managing the project budget. 
  • Identifies and advances research opportunities, acts as a sounding board to divisional management regarding the feasibility of projects, and is accountable for the identification and resolution of project problems and conflicts.
  • Maintains a high level of staff performance through effective supervision, recruitment, performance management and professional development activities and programs.
  • Develops financial reports, models and scenarios for the Director, and provides advice regarding sourcing and staffing requirements to ensure effective executon of projects.
  • Oversees budgets for the Research Office, identifying expenditure trends, managing risks and resolving discrepancies.
  • Manages the development of reports and metrics on research projects for presentation to senior management and external associations, to support College strategies, and to advance the reputation of the College.
  • Evaluates information submitted from various projects; provides advice to divisional management, identifying strategies and tactics to achieve business goals.
  • Manages the dissemination of information to various sources (e.g., website, D-Space, internal documentation, etc.).
  • Manages College intellectual property (IP) issues, including disclosure, process and policy development.
  • Identifies and acts on outreach strategies for promoting College research to industry, community organizations, and other educational institutions.
  • Prepares funding applications of high quality, including developing and writing funding proposals.
  • Mentors and advises faculty and students regarding research activities, methodology, statistical reporting, project planning, writing scientific journal articles and presenting research results, to ensure effective execution of projects.
Qualifications

 

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution recognized by the College, or an equivalent is required; Project Management certification or PMP designation would be an asset.
  • Minimum three years of research experience and successfully leading projects as a project manager.
  • Demonstrated experience with budget management, including the development of models and scenarios to support project planning as well as business and staffing decisions; demonstrated ability to interpret and manipulate complex data.
  • Experience working with scientific methods and conducting research.
  • Exceptional analytical, planning, conflict resolution and group facilitation skills; advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven progressive leadership and management skills, preferably in a unionized post-secondary or related environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to contribute effectively to a team environment.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.
