Title Associate Director, Immigration, Education & Skills Research and Programs
We are currently seeking an Associate Director to join our team leading the Conference Board of Canada’s research and programs involving immigration, education, and skills. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in immigration-related areas, especially the nexus between immigration and the workplace. The Associate Director will both lead specific research projects and share his or her expertise with a team of researchers as they execute annual research programs associated with corporate special projects, executive networks, and custom research. The Associate Director will also contribute to the day to day management and operations of the Education, Skills and Immigration group with the Industry and Business Strategy Division. The successful candidate will bring management expertise, solid research, analytical and advanced writing skills, as well as energy, passion and commitment. 
Reporting to the Executive Director, Education, Skills and Immigration, this permanent full-time position is located in Ottawa and is available immediately.
Principal Duties  
As the Associate Director, you will demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in independently anticipating and solving problems.  You will draw on your knowledge and experience of Canada’s immigration-related policies and workplace practices as well as knowledge of emerging issues, trends and global best practices. In addition to subject matter expertise, you will have the capacity to develop a knowledge intensive business to its full potential. You will work closely with the Director, customers, internal and external stakeholders as well as helping manage a team of researchers and program leaders in order to deliver high quality research and related programs. You will: 
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and division’s management team in providing vision and leadership in advancing and growing immigration, education, and skills research and programs.
  • Successfully execute on strategy to achieve goals.
  • Help oversee the day-to-day operations of the research team.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to identify and secure new business opportunities.
  • Oversee and lead research projects varying in size, scope and complexity.
  • Contribute to the Board's body of knowledge by publishing briefings and reports.
  • Provide leadership to selected executive networks and facilitate meetings and dialogue among executives from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.
  • Embrace the role of spokesperson for the Board speaking with authority and credibility at conferences, seminars, roundtables and media interviews.
  • Communicate effectively with senior executives.
  • Anticipate customer needs and develop new products.
  • Demonstrate sound financial and people management.
Skills & Qualifications


  • A Masters degree in a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 6 years of similar experience in a consulting or professional, customer focused environment.
  • A solid understanding of immigration-related policy and practice, including challenges and issues facing Canada and related stakeholders.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
  • Demonstrated success at the development and delivery of strategic goals and objectives as well as leveraging financial resources to meet goals and objectives. 
  • Proven success at business development including the capacity not only to maintain but to grow a successful business.
  • Proven success at managing a team of professional staff.
  • Ability to write clearly, concisely and quickly - advanced writing skills are essential and published work would be a definite asset.
  • Ability to communicate research findings to audiences of senior practitioners along with the capability of providing specialized advisory services.
  • Experience with managing complex projects from inception to completion.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers in an MS Office environment.
  • Familiarity with the needs and issues of the private and public sector community.
  • An extensive network of contacts with thought leaders and key national and international peer organizations.
  • Availability to travel within in Canada is required.
  • Bilingualism or multilingualism would be a definite asset.
