Title Economist, Centre for Municipal Studies
Overview

The Conference Board of Canada is recognized worldwide for its expertise in economic forecasting, modelling and analysis.  The Economic Outlook and Analysis group provides quarterly national, provincial and metropolitan economic forecasts to help our customers understand and anticipate the short and long-term trends in the domestic economic environment.  We are seeking applications for an Economist to join the Centre for Municipal Studies team. 

Reporting to the Associate Director, the successful candidate will be excited at the prospect of joining a team of experienced professionals.  The team produces insights into the economies of 28 Canadian census metropolitan areas (CMAs).  The Conference Board is the only organization that produces estimates of gross domestic product at the CMA level, making our coverage of the CMAs' economic performance the most comprehensive in the country. 

This is a permanent full-time position, located in Ottawa and is available immediately.

Characteristics  
To be considered for this position you must have completed a Masters degree in Economics. We are looking for candidates who bring a solid understanding of applied economics, bring mature judgment and above average written and oral communication skills, are committed to high quality work and can work effectively in a team environment.
Principal Duties
 
  • Conducts special analyses requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data and adherence to prescribed methodology.
  • Contributes to research projects under close supervision.
  • Prepares reports on assigned projects for internal or external customers.
  • Develops relationships with customers and consistently delivers superior customer service.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and input to other staff as required.
  • Prepares work plans and executes them with guidance.
Skills & Qualifications
 
  • Master degree in Economics.
  • Work experience in economic research, macro economic forecasting and econometrics would be an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written, with particular emphasis on the ability to write with clarity, precision and flair.
  • Strong research skills and a demonstrated proficiency in synthesizing complex concepts and information from a variety of sources.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with all levels of internal and external contact and customers.
  • Some experience and/or comfort level with public speaking is an asset.
  • Experience with the econometric software EViews.
  • Programming skills/experience.
  • Independent and able to multi-task as required.
  • Bilingualism (English/French written and spoken) is a definite asset.
