Position Overview The Transit Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the Corporation’s Transit Service, including the operation of conventional and transit for the disabled, maintenance of transit vehicles and administration of the transit service. Transit Services are provided seven days a week and approximately 20 hours a day.

The Transit Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and overseeing operational and maintenance functions of the transit division. In this role, the Transit Manager formulates policies, establishes objectives and assures implementation for the City's transit system (including conventional transit and transit for persons with disabilities).
Responsibilities The Transit Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the City’s Transit Service. This includes managing the annual budget and other financial documents, and developing long-term plans and programs for the transit division. You are also expected to establish all service standards and general performance standards for the system and assume responsibility for supervising the operation, maintenance, and promotion of the transit system in order to provide a safe, efficient, and accessible transportation system in the City of Burlington.

When necessary, the Transit Manager will make recommendations to Council on changes to transit service levels. He or she will work closely with Provincial and Regional Service Providers and Agencies on new and existing initiatives in the Transit Services area. This may include such projects as integrated fare systems.

The Transit Manager directs enforcement of safety policies and procedures to protect employees and passengers as well as property and equipment. He or she investigates accidents involving personnel, equipment, or property and initiates appropriate remedial or preventive action. You will also ensure compliance with City personnel policies and procedures and provisions of the union contract.

Other duties include: responding to the public, elected officials and staff inquiries and complaints and initiates corrective action designed to improve customer relations and service.

Great communication skills are a must! The Transit Manager will work closely with the Director of Transit in determining long and short range planning for Transit Services. When necessary, the Transit Manager will work as Acting Director.
Requirements The Transit Manager requires a degree or diploma in transportation planning or human resources management (or equivalent), and more than 5 years in a progressively more responsible supervisory/or management position with at least 3 years in a transit union environment. The successful applicant requires exposure to all facets of a transit system. The Transit Manager also requires excellent time management skills, including the ability to deal with conflicting demands and frequent changes in deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills, including a high degree of tact and diplomacy and the ability to handle upset individuals are also required. Strong attention to detail is necessary to avoid errors in safety or scheduling.
