Position Overview The City of Burlington is looking for a part-time Fire Service Communicator. The Communicator is the vital link between the Public and the Emergency Response. The primary focus of this position is the processing of emergency calls and requests for assistance. This is accomplished with the operation of dispatch console equipment, including: multi-line emergency and administration telephones, P25 Radio System, in-house computer and mapping programs, MTO COMPASS camera and Computer Aided Dispatch.

Responsibilities The Fire Service Communicator will be responsible for:
• Quickly assessing information provided by Callers to quickly and correctly dispatch the required apparatus and personnel in accordance with established procedures.
• Dealing effectively and professionally with people in stressful situations in a fast paced environment.
• Performing system tests, maintaining accurate records and performing other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in Emergency Services Communications, previous experience dispatching and tracking multiple vehicles; and/or successful completion of a Public Safety Communications Program. The Fire Service Communicator requires a high school diploma. Candidates must demonstrate a 35 word per minute typing speed with a high level of accuracy as well as knowledge of Microsoft Word, and clear written, verbal and heard communication skills. The City of Burlington is looking for applicants who are team players that can also works effectively on their own.
 
Successful completion of a typing and multitasking test is required before qualifying for an interview.  
 
Candidates must be available to work a minimum number of hours per month, to include: weekends and statutory holidays, 12 hour day and night shifts, partial shifts and call-ins for shift coverage with as little as an hour’s notice. Therefore, availability is a key requirement. During off-peak vacation months, Part-time Fire Service Communicators will be guaranteed 4 12-hour shifts per month. While you will have some latitude to pick shifts for Vacation Coverage and Pre-Booked Leave, the Communications Coordinator will also assign shifts to part-time Communications staff. If a pattern of unavailability presents before the year end, annual contracts may not be renewed.
