Title Manager, Publishing and Translation
Range Minimum $86,100
Summary The Manager, Publishing and Translation, is responsible for the production and translation of internal and external publications (paper and electronic) in support of CIHI’s strategic directions and business needs. This includes planning, managing and evaluating all workload and staff related to the mandate, as well as establishing and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external suppliers. The Publishing and Translation Department consists of a large staff that continuously handles a high volume of production on tight timelines. As such, this position requires candidates to have a significant experience managing large teams and complex production environments with a high volume of competing demands.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provides leadership and guidance to a large staff. Supervises, coaches, coordinates and monitors work, workload and performance of staff to ensure that quality is maintained and that learning opportunities are provided. Conducts annual performance management reviews.
  2. Plans and manages day-to-day operations, ensuring that requirements of the production schedule are met in a timely, cost-effective and efficient manner. Manages ad-hoc requests in a reasonable manner.
  3. Participates as a contributor to the Operations Committee on an ongoing basis to ensure that the work is aligned with the priorities of the organization. Provides feedback regarding the corporate Calendar of Deliverables.
  4. Establishes policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance of consistent application of the corporate identity standards to enhance the image and visibility of the organization.
  5. Manages the setting of policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance with translation industry standards and best practices. This includes French-terminology standards, both technical and linguistic, and providing resources to guide CIHI staff.
  6. Manages the development, planning and coordination of a comprehensive internal and external publishing and translation strategy, ensuring the strategies are aligned with CIHI’s overall corporate policies and strategic directions.
  7. Develops and monitors operating plans and budget of the Publishing and Translation Department.
  8. Promotes and encourages team building and open communication within the department and across the organization.
  9. Negotiates and manages all external contracts related to translation, the production of publications (electronic and paper based), freelance graphic designers and printing services.
  10. Works closely with the Director, Corporate Communications and Outreach, and participates in the Branch management activities.
  11. Liaises with internal and external stakeholders to create and maintain strong relationships across the organization, and assist in meeting the business objectives of all areas.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Undergraduate Degree in Marketing, Communications and/or Public Relations or a combination of education/experience.
  • Five to seven years of experience managing the design and production of print and electronic materials in a high volume complex environment, with a sound knowledge of best-practice creative design and publishing processes.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience managing staff.
  • Experience in as many of the following areas as possible would be an asset: marketing communications, corporate communications, public relations, campaign development, direct marketing, branding, PowerPoint and other presentations.
  • Experience overseeing and/or of language services would be an asset. This includes translation and adaptation into several languages, as well as creative writing, editing and proofing.
  • Experience in an agency setting is an asset.
  • Excellent leadership and people skills.
  • Sound knowledge of innovative and current publishing and translation practices.
  • Developed skills in coaching, consulting and negotiating.
  • Familiarity with Quark Xpress, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Acrobat and MS Office suite.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements.
  • Fluency in both official languages is a requirement.
