BCAA's Information Services (IS) team is hiring a permanent full-time Senior Database Administrator but internally this position is known as the Solution Specialist III - Data Tier. The Solution Specialist III - Data Tier provides expert level consulting, technical planning, technical design/architecture and operational direction in database design and management; and oversees all aspects of the business support systems. The SS III holds an enterprise-wide view and is regarded as the subject matter expert and provides effective strategic direction and makes complex decisions for which there are no set procedures. The SS III also assists others in more junior roles.
Key Responsibilities Include


  • Provides third level Support and Architect role that primarily makes complex decisions for which there are no set procedures.
  • Identifies connections, patterns or trends as it relates to database design and management and makes recommendations for action. Identifies systems and processes that can be standardized, defines and prioritizes initiatives and implements.
  • Implements and maintains preventive maintenance processes, standards and tools to ensure optimal system up-time of production systems.
  • Remains current on operation system administration procedures and best practices and ensures learning is documented and disseminated to the Database Infrastructure team.
  • Updates knowledge of accepted industry and company standards to improve service delivery.
  • Own his/her team 8D problem solving and team incident/change management processes.
  • Educates peers and customers when appropriate.
  • Coaches Support Specialist team members.
  • Ensures solutions do not negatively impact other parts of the system or introduce new defects.
  • Assumes the duties of a Support Specialist  during peak periods.



  • Leads and participates in concurrent projects.
  • Works closely with IS Leadership team on developing a strategic plan and framework for implementing upcoming technologies into the IS environment, and planning medium and long term goals (6 to 12 months).
  • Simplifies complex information from multiple sources to resolve issues.
  • Holds an enterprise-wide iew and is regarded as the subject matter expert in one or more areas of expertise, and provides effective strategic direction.
  • Contributes to business cases for enterprise-wide initiatives as a direct response to business drivers.
  • Develops strategies, policy and standards.
  • Ensures technology is aligned with BCAA’s goals and objectives.
  • Identifies and analyzes problems across projects or domain areas.
  • Develops logical models incorporating business requirements such as high availability, redundancy and disaster recovery into the logical/physical design.
  • Researches, pilots, evaluates new technologies and standards, identifies how they will integrate with the corporate network and recommends strategies.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of business cases in order to meet business needs and/or achieve operational effectiveness.
  • Develops standards and procedures for implementing new technology.
  • Mentors people and provides input and guidance to cross-functional teams.
  • Coaches support staff.
  • Performs knowledge transfer and training between IS and other BCAA business units. Informs Project and/or Resource Manager on any issues or risks.
  • Assists Management in planning short to medium term work goals (3 to 6 months).
  • Participates as a member of the Technology Solutions Architectural Committee to present new ideas and provide improved methods and processes for system design and maintenance.


  • Carries out other related tasks and projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Degree in computing science or IT
  • Experience: At least 10 years database and project coordination in the IT industry.
  • Technical: Experience with DBMS, in-depth knowledge of SQL Server DBMS and RDBMS monitoring and modeling tools
  • Knowledge of Service Level Agreements (SLA’s), Operating Level Agreements (OLA’s)
  • Familiar with Project Management Methodology (PMP)
  • Data security and recovery (including back-ups)
  • Interoperability
  • Database design and architecture – logical structure and physical
  • Database integrity, capacity planning, performance and tuning
  • Database software installation processes and techniques
  • Relationship between database design/management and application performance
  • Contributed to the procurement for data management solutions and related services
  • Demonstrates expert knowledge and ability to apply knowledge to the most complex situations
  • Developed new approaches, methods and policies
  • Recognized subject matter expert, internally and externally
  • Experience leading coaching and guidance of other professionals
  • Ability to diagnose faults under pressure by understanding the integration of complex systems
