Title Senior Estimator (02-410)
Position Overview Under the supervision of the Senior Vice President, the Senior Estimator in Aecon Buildings Western Inc. will be responsible for the direction, preparation and documentation of work completion estimates for construction projects and also managing any associated risk. Initially the geographical focus will be Alberta and primarily buildings intended for industrial use.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepares and coordinates the preparation of full cost estimates on conceptual, design-build, or general tender for a variety of large projects
  • In preparation of full cost estimates, the Senior Estimator will interpret documentation, specifications and design drawings to define scope/contents of the estimates
  • Review/analyze bid packages from subcontractors
  • Reviewing design options and adopting/creating best practices based on cost, engineering quality, availability of materials or other agreed upon factors
  • In preparation for close out estimate, the Senior Estimator is accountable for analyzing each section for scope, pricing and clarifications
  • Responsible for maintaining large working files as supporting documentation for estimating figures including current, accurate information on prices from venders through exclusive contact, marketing material, pre-existing price lists, etc.

  • Continuous consideration of cost first principle
  • Interpret project drawings and specifications
  • Identify any document weaknesses that can be explored or need clarification
  • Evaluate contract documents and prepare detailed cost estimates of the construction requirements
  • Manage subcontractor and supplier costing and quote process
  • Responsible for accurate take-offs of quantities from project drawings
  • Responsible for the preparation and documentation of project estimates
  • Incorporate all addendums to plans and specifications into on-going estimates
  • Analyze sub-trade quotations
  • Liaise with subcontractors and owners for clarification of issues
  • Draft the original schedule on which the bid estimate is assembled
  • Cost out any anticipated or received scope of work exclusions
  • Set up and manage closing room
  • Prepare re-post of tender
  • Lead any Value Engineering exercise
  • Work with other Aecon units to support them in their project leads
  • Strategize with Management on each opportunity approach
  • Establish major Purchase Orders and subcontracts for new projects
  • Establish the Project budgets to be used in the costing system
  • Work with the construction team in the preparation of change orders and the assessment of claims
  • Determine labor rates, required hours and equipment costs
  • Submit bid bond and Insurance applications when applicable
  • Review job cost reports to determine where estimating can be improved
  • Identify project risks and manage them through estimating phase
  • Review and ensure that sub-contracts and PO's include agreed upon prices and conditions
  • Establish complete and complimentary Scope-of-Works for each sub-trade
  • Cost out potential additional costs claim situations
  • Prepare bid presentation
  • Manage estimating staff with proper delegation and follow-up
  • Manage Subguard approval process and database when applicable
  • Conduct hand-over meeting to execution team
  • Manage staff security clearance process
  • Prepare and co-ordinate initial project schedule in co-operation with other stake holders
Required Knowledge & Skills
  • Minimum of 10 years construction industry, the last 6 years in a leadership role within fast- paced estimating environment
  • Demonstrated experience and solid processes for managing risk in preparation of well-organized estimates, budgets and schedules
  • Negotiation skills
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) or Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) an asset Strong verbal and written skills are essential
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented and excellent time management skills
  • Strong relationship skills to be maintained with both internal and external customers
  • Strong track record of successfully bidding work, preferably some projects including financing
