Division/Portfolio Overview The Bio and Industrial Technologies Division works with industry and government to develop, test and deploy new technologies and process that will help build commerce in Alberta while reducing environmental impacts. Our Bioresource Technologies Portfolio located in Vegreville, Alberta delivers programs that support the emergence of a strong bio-economy in Alberta to enhance profitability and sustainability of our primary agriculture and forest industries. Key clients and partners for the group include industry, SMEs, entrepreneurs, government agencies, non-government organizations and academic institutions.

Position Overview We seek a qualified researcher with expertise in biomass pyrolysis and thermal conversion technologies to work as part of our Portfolio. This position will involve hands-on work in optimizing and running of pyrolysis R&D equipment for the production of biochar, biofuel and contribute to the development of biochar end-use applications. The primary focus is research and technology development and demonstration that lead to commercialization. The major activities include technical advancement in the field of biomass pyrolysis and biochar product development; identification of business opportunities; interaction with clients; generation of technical proposals and contracts; project management; analysis and interpretation of experimental results; collaboration with colleagues; and, interaction with external collaborators. The researcher will be expected to work as part of a multi-institution and inter-disciplinary team of researchers technologist and external industry partners.
Requirements Candidates require a post graduate degree in chemical engineering or a related discipline (Ph.D. preferred) with extensive experience working with research organizations, government, or industry. A strong understanding of biomass resources and bio-based materials development is desired. The individual must be able to work and conduct research independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and presentation skills and must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate also requires a valid driver’s license.
